Cairo: Oxfam, an organization working for poverty alleviation, has made a shocking disclosure and said that every single minute 11 people die due to starvation worldwide. Along with this, Oxfam has also told that in the last one year the number of people facing famine-like situation has increased six times in the whole world.

people died due to starvation more than corona

Oxfam said in a report titled 'The Hunger Virus Multiplex' that the death toll due to starvation has exceeded the number of people who died due to Kovid-19. Due to Kovid-19, about seven people die every minute in the world, while the death toll due to starvation is 11 per minute.

15.5 crore people are facing food insecurity

Oxfam America President and CEO Abby Maxman said, "The figures are shocking, but we must not forget that these figures are made of people who are going through unimaginable suffering." The report said that about 155 million people in the world are facing the acute crisis of food insecurity and this figure is 20 million more than last year's figures. About two-thirds of these people are starving and the reason for this is the ongoing military conflict in their country.

More than 5.2 lakh people on the verge of starvation

Maxman said, 'The economic impact of Kovid-19 and merciless conflicts, the worsening climate crisis has pushed more than 5.2 lakh people to the brink of starvation. Instead of coping with the global pandemic, conflicting factions are fighting each other, ultimately affecting millions of people who are already reeling under weather-related disasters and economic shocks.

These countries are most affected by starvation

Oxfam said that despite the global pandemic coronavirus, spending on armies around the world increased by $51 billion during the pandemic, an amount more than the amount needed by the United Nations to end hunger. At least six times more than that. The countries that have been placed in the list of 'most affected by hunger' in this report are Afghanistan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen. There are situations of conflict in all these countries.

If the struggle does not stop, the situation will become disastrous

"Hunger is being used as a weapon of war by depriving ordinary citizens of food and water and not allowing humanitarian relief to reach them," Maxman said. If markets are being bombed, crops and cattle are being destroyed, people cannot stay safe or find food. The organization urged the governments to stop the conflicts otherwise starvation conditions would become disastrous.
