On the other hand, Fitbit, which is Apple's biggest rival in the smartwatch, packs some advanced sleep tracking features on its smart watches and fitness trackers that can not only track the total sleep time and quality of sleep but they can also differentiate between various sleep cycles - light, deep and REM sleep cycles.

Sleep monitoring is a critical functionality that Apple needs to add to its smart watches if it wants to up its ante against Fitbit, which is widely popular in the domain of fitness-tracking wearables.
