LONDON: Opener Prithvi Shaw and middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav have been included in the Indian Test squad as replacements for injured Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar for the five-match series against England starting on August 4. Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is among the stand-by players, has been included in the main squad while stand-by pacer Avesh Khan will return home with a fractured left thumb. Gill has a leg injury below the knee, while Sundar has an injury on his right hand finger.

Cricket Board of India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah said in a press release, “The All India Senior Selection Committee has selected Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav as substitutes. All-rounder Washington Sundar has got an injection in the bowling finger of his right hand. However, he will take longer than expected to recover and is not fit to bowl. He is out of the rest of the tour.

Both Avesh and Sundar suffered injuries while playing a first-class practice match for County XI against India. Both of them played for their team due to several players of the home team being injured or isolated from Kovid-19. The BCCI said that fast bowler Avesh Khan suffered an injury in the thumb of his left hand on the first day of the warm-up match. He was taken for an X-ray and it confirmed the fracture. The specialist was contacted to manage the injury. He has been ruled out of England's tour of India.

Suryakumar has been in good form and was adjudged the Player of the Series during India's 2-1 win in the One Day International series against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The right-handed batsman also scored a half-century in the first T20 against Sri Lanka on Sunday night. He has scored at an average of 44 in first-class matches for Mumbai and West Zone, scoring 14 centuries.

The board also informed that wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, who was found to be Kovid positive, has recovered from Kovid-19 with two negative RT-PCR tests. According to the statement, after getting approval from the BCCI medical team, he has started preparing for the upcoming Test series.
