New Delhi : The Central Government said in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that the decision to impose GST on various items including cereals, curd, lassi has not been taken alone. For this, the Group of Ministers (GoM) of different states had agreed. This information was given by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary in reply to supplementary questions during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha.

Chaudhary said that in the 45th meeting of the GST Council held in Lucknow, it was decided to form a Group of Ministers (GoM) of different states. He said the GoM included ministers from states like Karnataka, Bihar, Kerala, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal. He said that this GoM takes decisions unanimously.

Earlier, senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi had questioned whether Delhi, Kerala, Rajasthan and West Bengal ruled by opposition parties in the recent meeting in which it was decided to impose GST on cereals, curd, lassi etc. Like the ministers of the states were present. He also questioned whether these states had opposed or disagreed with the imposition of GST on these items in the meeting.

'The decision was taken with the approval of the people involved in the group'

Pankaj Chaudhary said that the decision was taken only with the approval of the people involved in the decision making group. In response to a question related to bringing petroleum products under the purview of GST, he said that such decisions are taken by the GST Council and this proposal had come in it. Choudhary said the proposal is still under consideration. BJP member Ashok Bajpai had questioned whether uniform GST would be implemented on petroleum products under the principle of 'one nation, one price'.
