India-US Tariff War: US President Donald Trump has taken a big step by taking a tough stand against India on the issue of buying oil from Russia. The Trump administration has announced to impose an additional 25% tariff on goods imported from India, with which the total tariff on India has increased to 50%. This decision has created a stir in global trade and diplomacy.China's sharp reactionChina has strongly criticized this move of America. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun termed it as an abuse of trade rules. He said, "China has always been against the abuse of tariffs. Our stand is clear and firm in this matter." Guo also warned that such steps could harm the global trade system. Why heavy tariff on India? In a press conference held at the White House, President Trump defended the decision of 50% tariff on India and said, "India is very close to China in buying oil from Russia. We are moving towards secondary sanctions regarding the import of Russian oil." Trump also indicated that this action is just the beginning and more stringent steps can be taken in the future. When asked if tariffs would be removed from India if there is a settlement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump said, "For now India will have to pay 50% tariff. What will happen in the future will be seen." Trump also clarified that action was taken against India because it is among the major countries buying oil from Russia.Low tariff on China and Turkey, questions on IndiaWhen Trump was asked in the press conference that China and Turkey are also buying oil from Russia, then why such a heavy tariff on India, he replied, "It has been only 8 hours since the tariff was imposed on India. You will see a lot more in the future. There will be a flood of secondary sanctions." It is worth noting that the US has imposed 30% tariff on China and 15% on Turkey, while 50% tariff has been imposed on India.Strong opposition from IndiaIndia has termed this decision of America as "unfortunate" and "unfair". The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in an official statement, "India buys oil to meet the energy needs of its 1.4 billion population. We will take all possible steps to protect our national interests." India also indicated that it may consider retaliation at the diplomatic and trade level in this matter.Tariff deadlineThe first 25% tariff imposed by the US has come into effect from August 7, 2025, while the additional 25% tariff will be effective from August 27, 2025. In this way, a total of 50% tariff has been imposed on India regarding Russian oil imports.Global impactThis move by the US can further increase tensions in global trade and energy markets. India, which is dependent on countries like Russia for its energy needs, may now look for new trade and diplomatic avenues. At the same time, reactions from China and other countries can further complicate the issue.
