China has blocked a proposal to nominate Pakistan-based terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki to the UN Security Council as Global Tanki. The 1267 Islamic State and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee proposed to designate Makki as a terrorist. According to reports, China blocked this proposal at the last minute. Makki is a relative of Hafiz Saeed, the Lashkar-e-Taiba leader and the main conspirator of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

Who is Abdul Rehman Makki?

Makki is one of the top leaders of Lashkar-e-Taiba. The US has declared Makki a terrorist and has a $2 million bounty on him. Makki is famous for giving anti-India speeches in Pakistan. Makki has been associated with many terrorist organizations and is known to bring the youth on the path of terror. Makki is believed to have close links with Taliban leader Mullah Omar and Al Qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahiri.

In 2017, Owaid Rehman Makki, son of Abdul Rehman Makki, was killed in an operation by Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

China did this even during Masood Azhar's time

China has in the past blocked attempts by India and other countries to enlist Pakistani terrorists. India achieved a major diplomatic victory at the United Nations in May 2019 when Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar was declared a 'global terrorist'. China had also obstructed the process of designating Masood Azhar as a 'global terrorist'.
