Delhi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday urged Congress members to desist from protesting when top party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with financial irregularities, saying " Law should take its course." TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury had also taken a similar stand when under investigation in the coal theft case from Mamata Banerjee-led party MP Abhishek Banerjee. The interrogation was conducted by officials of the central agency.

Congress' Tripura unit president Birjit Sinha, however, hit out at Ghosh, saying that "unlike Gandhi, the TMC MP was accused in many cases and the two issues cannot be compared". I did not mention the cases to which he was referring. Talking to reporters, Ghosh said, "We have nothing to say on the Enforcement Directorate's summons to Rahul Gandhi. Congress and CPI(M) had welcomed the CBI and ED questioning of Abhishek Banerjee.

Ghosh said, "He had said that the law should take its course. If this is the stand of Choudhary, he should ideally accompany Gandhi to the ED office."

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faced questioning by ED officials earlier in the day, while his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi sought more time citing his ill health. Congress workers on Monday staged protests across the country, claiming that central agencies are being "misused" to harass its leaders.

Alleging that the Congress was acting as a 'B team' of the BJP in West Bengal, Ghosh said a party should not have two perspectives on the same subject. “When TMC raised its voice against misuse of central agencies by the Centre, Congress and CPI(M) leaders were in no mood to listen. This is the reason why both the parties have almost ceased to exist in Bengal.

Meanwhile, criticizing Ghosh's remarks, Sinha alleged, "The nation knows that Didi (Mamata Banerjee) joined hands with (Prime Minister) Modiji from inside to save her nephew (Abhishek). Rahul Gandhi was summoned by the ED, despite not being involved in any corruption. Both the cases are different.
