Sri Lanka's president gave the military sweeping police powers in the wake of the Easter bombings which killed at least 310 people and wounded 500 others, while officials disclosed that intelligence agencies had warned weeks ago. 40 suspects arrested in connection with the blasts. A nationwide state of emergency was scheduled to begin from Monday midnight, the president’s office said.
