According to the Indian Meteorological department, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 on the Richter scale hit Nicobar Islands at 5.30 am today. Earlier in January, a strong earthquake of magnitude 6 hit the seismologically prone Andaman and Nicobar Islands, National Centre for Seismology (NCS) had said. The earthquake hit the region at 8.43 am and its epicentre was Nicobar Islands region.
