New Delhi : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has hit out at the Narendra Modi government at the Center for increasing taxes on everything from food items to hotel stays, alleging that the Prime Minister's "Gabbar Singh Tax" is now taking the form of a "household apocalypse tax".

Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter, "The fall in income and employment is on top of the rising shock of inflation. The Prime Minister's 'Gabbar Singh Tax' has now taken a formidable form of 'Gharsathi Apocalypse Tax'." He cited a news report that taxes on food items, education and hotel stay have become expensive. The former Congress chief had earlier termed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as "Gabbar Singh Tax".

Significantly, the panel, headed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising representatives from all states and union territories, has accepted the GoM's recommendation to review the exemption from GST, which is currently in packaged and labeled food items. has gone. Under this, pre-packaged and labeled meat, fish, curd, cheese, honey, dried legumes, dried makhana, wheat and other cereals, wheat flour, jaggery, murmura (muri), all goods and organic manure and coir pith compost. There will be no exemption from GST and now it will be taxed at five percent.

Similarly, 18 per cent GST will be levied on charges charged by banks for issuance of checks (in loose or booked form). Maps and charts including atlas will attract a fee of 12 percent. Unpacked, unlabeled and unbranded goods will be exempt from GST. In addition, 12 per cent tax will be levied on hotel rooms priced below Rs 1,000 per day.
