Shreyas Gopal dismissed Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Marcus Stoinis to pick up his maiden hat-trick in the Indian Premier League as Rajasthan Royals rocked Royal Challengers Bangalore in a rain-hit match in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
This the 2nd hat-trick in the 2019 Indian Premier League after Sam Curran of Kings XI Punjab had taken one against Delhi Capitals earlier in the season.
Shreyas Gopal became only the third Indian player after Amit Mishra and Yuvraj Singh to pick up multiple hat-tricks in Twenty20 format. Gopal had bagged a hat-trick in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018-19 for Karnataka against Haryana.
Rajasthan Royals had won the toss and decided to field earlier in the evening but heavy rain meant the players had to wait for 3 hours and 26 minutes before the match, reduced to 5-overs-a-side, could finally begin.
Virat Kohli came out all guns blazing and hit the first 2 balls from Varun Aaron for sixes. AB de Villiers joined the party with 2 boundaries off Varun Aaron.
Kohli then hit Shreyas Gopal for his 3rd six of the innings but he was dismissed for a 7-ball 25. AB de Villiers fell to Gopal in the next ball - this was the second time in the season that Gopal dismissed both RCB danger men.
Marcus Stoinis walked out to face the hat-trick ball but he could not avoid a dream feat for Shreyas Gopal. He now has 18 wickets from 13 matches in the 2019 IPL.Shreyas Gopal, who plays for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, is a Bangalore local boy. Born in 1992, Gopal has played 56 first-class matches and has picked 184 wickets. In 29 List A matches, Gopal has 46 wickets.
Earlier in the season, Sam Curran had stunned Delhi Capitlas with a hat-trick in Mohali. DC were cruising along in their chase before Curran led a sensational fightback for KXIP with 3 wickets in 3 balls. He would latet go on to say he had no idea he had taken a hat-trick because of the noise in Mohali.
