In fact, a person from Thane district of Maharashtra has been arrested in different states for cheating some jewelers and hoteliers to the tune of Rs 25 lakh by tampering with the QR codes. News agency PTI reported in its report that, the accused named Subramaniam Ramakrishna Iyer used to buy jewelery items or book rooms in hotels and then tampered with the digital payment mode while paying the money.

The fraud was carried out in a very clever way. The accused used to make a payment of Re 1 in another account after he failed to make his payment for purchase or booking due to paucity of money. The police told the agency that he then used to tamper with the successful transaction and change the name and amount of the payee to make the payment appear as successful.

The accused then used to show the screenshots of the tampered transactions to the victims of the fraud to show that the payment had been done. The 33-year-old vicious accused used some app to merge both failed and successful transactions and made a third screenshot which looked like successful payment.

It happened that the whole case of fraud was exposed

Senior Inspector Sadashiv Nikam said that a fraud victim lodged a complaint of cheating of Rs 97,330 with Vartak Nagar police station in Thane, after which the entire scam came to light. Nikam said- investigation revealed that similar crimes were registered at Shivaji Park and NM Marg police stations in neighboring Mumbai.

Cheating was carried out in about 7 states

The officer said that the accused had cheated 14 jewelers and 32 hoteliers from different places including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Rajasthan.

Now the accused is behind bars

Based on the complaint, the accused was arrested on Monday and a case was registered against him under the provisions of IPC and Information Technology Act.
