Mumbai: A 24-year-old patient who was bitten by a rat while taking treatment at BMC run Rajawadi Hospital in Mumbai died on Wednesday. Srinivasan was diagnosed with meningitis and liver problems. The exact reason for his death is awaited.

The shocking incident of rat biting Srinivas Yellappa inside the ICU came to light on Tuesday. He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and was put on a ventilator after the initial diagnosis. Yellappa’s sister Yashodha alleged on Wednesday that her family was not allowed to see him from 4 pm to 8 pm. Later, they were informed about his demise.

“What happens to our brother should not happen to other patients. We will seek justice for my brother. Why we were kept outside the hospital. We will ask the police to investigate this case and take action against those responsible,” said Yashodha.

Vidya Thakur, medical superintendent of Rajawadi Hospital remained unavailable for comment. Earlier, she had said that the hospital will take corrective measures to avoid such incidents in the future.

“The patient was admitted to the ground floor of ICU. Food kept by patients in the ward is one of the reasons for the presence of rats. We have issued warnings to patients not to leave food products behind. We regularly use sticks and rat traps. We will take corrective measures so that such incidents are not repeated in the future,” Thakur has said.

The Opposition has targeted Sena-led BMC for negligence. “In Sion hospital bodies were kept next to alive patients. A year after, BMC administration has not improved. Doctors in the ICU are outsourced. Mumbai model is praised for Covid management but if incidents like this come forward what’s the use of these praises,” said Leader of Opposition, Praveen Darekar.
