Amidst the warning of the third wave of corona infection, work is also going on at a rapid pace on the vaccine for children. Bharat Biotech started the trial of Covaxin on children in June itself and now it is learned that preparations are being made to give the second dose of the vaccine to the children involved in the trial soon.

According to information received from sources, the second dose of Covaccine has been given to the children of 6 to 12 years who participated during the trial in Delhi AIIMS. At the same time, next week the second dose will be given to the children of 2 to 6 years. An interim report is expected later this month, which will give a rough idea of how effective the vaccine is on children.

On May 12, amidst warnings of a third wave, the Subject Expert Committee recommended a trial of the vaccine on children. After this the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) approved the trial.

This trial is being done on a total of 525 children in the country. In these, three groups of 175-175 children have been made. The first group consists of 175 children in the age group of 12 to 18 years. The second group consisted of 175 children in the age group of 6 to 12 years and the third group consisted of 175 children in the age group of 2 to 6 years.

These children were to be given two doses of the vaccine at a gap of 28-28 days. After this, approval will be given for its use on children only on the basis of the results. AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria had expressed the possibility of getting the vaccine for children by September.

Not only Bharat Biotech, but Zydus Cadila's vaccine is also undergoing trials on children.
