India / Rahul Gandhi appears in Surat court to defend himself in a criminal defamation case over the Modi surname remark

Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi arrived in Gujarat today to hear the defamation case. The hearing of the case is going on in Surat's fast track court here. Actually, Rahul Gandhi is accused of insulting the Modi society.

In the year 2019, BJP MLA Purnesh Modi had filed a case against Rahul Gandhi under sections 499 and 500 of IPC. The BJP MLA had said in his complaint that Rahul Gandhi has insulted the Modi society by saying 'Sab Modi chor hai'. Surat Chief Judicial Magistrate AN Dave had a week ago directed Rahul Gandhi to be present on June 24 to record his final statement in the contempt case filed by BJP MLA from Surat, Purnesh Modi.

The MLA from Surat West seat had alleged in his complaint that while addressing an election rally in 2019, Rahul Gandhi had defamed the entire Modi community by saying that why do all thieves have Modi in their names?

At an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka on April 13, 2019, Rahul Gandhi had reportedly said, "Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi... they all have Modi in their names". Why is Modi in the names of all thieves? He was the Congress President when he made this remark. Earlier in October 2019, Rahul Gandhi had appeared in the court and had declared himself innocent.
