India / Supreme Court dismissed Centre plea which stated no such ex gratia amount can be paid those died due to Covid-19

Coronavirus in the country and directed the central government to pay compensation to the families of those who died of the epidemic. The Supreme Court said that we are not fixing the compensation but the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) should issue a guideline to determine the ex-gratia amount to be paid to each Covid victim within six weeks.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave a big verdict on the deaths due to Coronavirus in the country and directed the central government to pay compensation to the families of those who died of the epidemic. The Supreme Court said that we are not fixing the compensation but the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) should issue a guideline to determine the ex-gratia amount to be paid to each Covid victim within six weeks.

NDMA failed in discharge of duty: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court said that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is statutorily mandated to provide minimum standards of relief, including ex-gratia, to Covid victims. NDMA has failed to discharge its statutory duty by not providing the ex-gratia amount.

About 4 lakh people have lost their lives in the country due to Corona

According to the data of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, so far 3 crore 3 lakh 62 thousand 484 people have been infected with Coronavirus across the country, in which 3 lakh 98 thousand 454 people have lost their lives, while 2 crore 94 lakh 27 thousand 330 people have been cured. There are 5 lakh 37 thousand active cases of Kovid-19 in the country.

Supreme Court's big decision regarding death certificate

Along with this, the Supreme Court ordered that the cause of death and the day of death will have to be written on the death certificate. The government will make guidelines on this in six months. Those who have got the death certificate and they have objection to it, then the government will reconsider it. For this, the government will give the option of complaint to such people so that the death certificate is issued again.
