New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech on the occasion of the 74th Independence Day on Saturday, said that India is free today because of the sacrifices the freedom fighters made to free the country from the clutches of the British.

Delivering his seventh consecutive Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Narendra Modi said August 15 is a day to remember the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and show gratitude to the security personnel.

"My fellow Indians, we are breathing in a free India because of the sacrifices freedom fighters made. This is a day to remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters. This is also a day to show gratitude to the security personnel including that of Army, paramilitary and police ensuring our safety," PM Modi said.

PM Narendra Modi also lauded the fight put up by Corona Warriors of the country who have been relentlessly battling the coronavirus pandemic as medical professionals, police personnel and providing other essential services.

PM Modi said, “We can’t even count the number of nameless faces who have worked to fight against the coronavirus pandemic in these months. To these workers and Corona Warriors, I bow my head with humility.”

Ahead of his speech on Independence Day, PM Modi had extended greetings to the people of the country. In a tweet, PM Modi said, "Happy Independence Day to all fellow Indians. Jai Hind!"
