The second wave was more dangerous than the first

More cases of black fungus in second wave

In the first wave of corona, 11% of the patients got secondary infection, while in the second wave this number increased significantly. In the second wave, 27.6% of the patients got bacterial or fungal infection. According to Max Hospital, 169 patients of mucormycosis ie black fungus were admitted in their 10 hospitals in the second wave. Out of which 17 lost their lives. Whereas during the first wave only 10 patients of mucormycosis were admitted, out of which 2 people died. Dr Sandeep Budiraja (Medical Director, Max Healthcare Group) says that secondary infection has killed many patients. Between June and August 2020, 3.6% of patients had secondary infections, of which 57% died.

Which disease patients became victims of corona?

Mixing the data of 10 of its hospitals in Max Hospital, through an important study, tried to know what was the difference between the first and second wave of corona. The study revealed some very surprising things. The study found that the number of patients with chronic diseases who became victims of corona was 10% more than in the first wave. In the second wave, patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease became more victims of corona. Contrary to popular belief, heart patients did not suffer as much.

- In the first wave of corona, 43% of the patients were those who were suffering from diabetes, in the second wave this number was about 45%.

In the first wave of corona, there were 41% patients suffering from high blood pressure while in the second wave there were about 44%.

The number of patients suffering from kidney disease was 13.6% in the first wave, while it increased to 15.2% in the second wave.

The number of heart patients was 5.6% in the first wave, which increased to 6.2% in the second wave.

Second wave wreaked havoc on youth

Let us tell you that 19852 patients were included in this study by Max Hospital. In which there were 14398 patients of the first wave and 5454 of the second wave. Out of 14398, 4705 i.e. 32% cases were serious. Whereas in the second wave, out of 5454 cases, 2147 i.e. 39% cases were of serious category. In the first wave, 4986 cases were mild i.e. 34% whereas in the second wave only 1416 i.e. 26% cases were of mild category. Men below 40 years of age lost their lives in the first wave to 1.3% while in the second wave 4.1% of people lost their lives in this age group.

Why is this study important?

Let us tell you that this is the biggest study ever to compare the first and second wave of corona in the country. The period from April to December 2020 was taken in the first wave, while the period from January to June 2021 was included for the second wave. Doctors believe that in the coming times, patients who have recovered from corona will be doing the most rounds of hospitals.
