India / Winter session ends as both houses adjourned sine die

New Delhi: The winter session of the parliament has concluded today as both the upper and lower house have been adjourned sine die amid disruptions by the oppositions.

The Winter session had started on November 29 and was scheduled to end on December 23. However, the session is going to be concluded a day early. A parliamentary source had told the news agency PTI that the government has completed most of its legislative agenda.

According to a report by the news agency PTI, the Rajya Sabha had 18 sittings and was disrupted multiple times this year with a loss of 18 hours and 48 minutes. Rajya Sabha witnessed more interruptions after the suspension of 12 opposition party members over their “unruly” conduct.

A day before the adjournment, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for throwing the Rajya Sabha rule book towards the chair during the discussion on the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill.

On the other hand, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that the lower house witnessed record productivity of 204 percent on December 2. The opposition staged disruptions on multiple issues including inflation and the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.

However, despite the disruptions, the winter session witnessed the passage of many important bills that included the Farm laws Repeal Bill, the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, and the introduction of much talked about Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill aimed at increasing the legal age for marriage of women from 18 to 21 years.
