Andaman and Nicobar News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the ceremony of naming the 21 largest unnamed islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands after Param Vir Chakra winners through video conference today on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Please inform that the day of 23rd January is celebrated as 'Parakram Diwas'. According to a statement issued in this regard, Prime Minister Modi will also unveil a model of the National Memorial dedicated to Subhash Chandra Bose to be built on the island named after Netaji at the event.

Keeping in view the historical importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and to honor the memory of Netaji, Ross Island was renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island by Prime Minister Modi during his visit to the island in 2018. Neil Dweep and Havelock Island were renamed as Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep respectively.

According to the statement, it was decided to name the unnamed islands after Major Somnath Sharma, Subedar and Honorary Captain Karam Singh, Second Lieutenant Rama Raghoba Rane, Naik Jadunath Singh, Company Havildar Major Piru Singh, Captain GS Salaria, Lieutenant Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa, Subedar Joginder Singh, Major Shaitan Singh, Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hameed and Lt Col Ardeshir Burjorji Tarapore.

Other Param Vir Chakra awardees after whom islands are being named include Lance Naik Albert Ekka, Major Hoshiar Singh, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetrapal, Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon, Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran, Naib Subedar Bana Singh, Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar and Subedar Major (Retd) Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav.

This will be the basis for naming 21 islands

The Prime Minister's Office said that giving due respect to the real life heroes of the country has always been the prime minister's top priority. Moving forward in this spirit, it has been decided to name the 21 largest unnamed islands of the archipelago after the 21 Param Vir Chakra winners, the PMO said. The largest unnamed island will be named after the first Param Vir Chakra winner, the second largest unnamed island will be named after the second Param Vir Chakra winner, and so on. The Prime Minister's Office said the initiative would be an eternal tribute to the nation's heroes, many of whom made the supreme sacrifice protecting the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
