The release of Aditya Dhar's film 'Dhurandhar-2' has reignited discussions surrounding the life and criminal history of Atiq Ahmed, the notorious mafia-turned-politician from Uttar Pradesh. The film introduces a character named 'Atif Ahmed,' which many viewers and critics believe is inspired by the real-life persona of Atiq Ahmed. In the cinematic narrative, the character is depicted as a central figure in a fake currency racket originating from Pakistan, intended to influence elections in Uttar Pradesh. Atiq Ahmed, who was assassinated in police custody in April 2023, remains a significant figure in the history of organized crime and politics in North India.

Early Life and Entry into the World of Crime

Atiq Ahmed was born in the Chakia locality of Prayagraj (then Allahabad) to Firoz Ahmed, a tonga driver. According to official records, Atiq's academic journey ended prematurely after he failed his high school examinations. Driven by a desire for rapid wealth and influence, he entered the criminal underworld at a young age, while his first murder charge was registered in 1979 when he was just 17 years old. During that period, the old city of Allahabad was dominated by a local gangster named Chand Baba. Atiq eventually challenged this dominance and, following the murder of Chand Baba, established himself as the primary figure in the region's criminal landscape.

Political Dominance and Legislative Career

Leveraging his influence in the criminal world, Atiq Ahmed transitioned into politics in 1989. He won his first election as an independent candidate from the Allahabad West assembly constituency, while his political career spanned several decades, during which he served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) five times. In 2004, he reached the pinnacle of his political career by winning the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat on a Samajwadi Party ticket. This transition into mainstream politics provided him with significant administrative use, allowing his criminal empire to expand across Prayagraj and neighboring districts through extortion and land grabbing.

The Raju Pal Murder and Legal Repercussions

The trajectory of Atiq Ahmed's life changed Importantly following the 2005 murder of Raju Pal, a sitting MLA from the Bahujan Samaj Party. Raju Pal had defeated Atiq's brother, Ashraf, in a high-stakes by-election for the seat vacated by Atiq after his move to the Parliament. According to the police investigation, the defeat was seen as a blow to Atiq's local authority. On January 25, 2005, Raju Pal was shot dead in broad daylight. This incident brought Atiq and his brother under intense legal and political scrutiny, marking the beginning of a long series of judicial battles that would eventually lead to his downfall.

Crackdown and the Umesh Pal Incident

Following the change of government in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, the state administration initiated a massive crackdown on organized crime. Atiq Ahmed was arrested and later shifted to the Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat following a Supreme Court order. However, even from behind bars, his influence persisted. On February 24, 2023, Umesh Pal, the key witness in the Raju Pal murder case, was assassinated in Prayagraj. The incident, captured on CCTV, showed Atiq's son Asad and several associates executing the attack. This led to a nationwide outcry and a subsequent police operation that resulted in the death of Asad in an encounter in Jhansi.

Final Days and Assassination in 2023

The end of Atiq Ahmed's four-decade-long reign came on April 15, 2023. While being escorted by the police for a routine medical check-up in Prayagraj, Atiq and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three individuals posing as journalists, while the entire assassination was captured live on national television. In 'Dhurandhar-2', the character Atif Ahmed mirrors this blend of political power and criminal enterprise. The film portrays the character's involvement in cross-border illegal activities and his eventual neutralization by security agencies, reflecting the complex real-world dynamics of crime and state intervention.
