A situation of communal tension emerged in the Silla Ghrat area of Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, on Saturday after a youth allegedly entered the Jalpa Mata Temple and set fire to the sacred clothes of the deity. The incident occurred in Kalyu village around 5:00 AM, leading to widespread outrage among the local residents. Following the discovery of the act, police authorities were deployed to the site to maintain law and order. According to officials, the suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident, and multiple police teams have been formed to apprehend him.
Details of the Incident and Local Discovery
According to police reports, the incident came to light when villagers arrived at the temple for morning prayers and found the sacred garments (vastra) offered to the deity partially burnt. The news of the desecration spread rapidly through Kalyu village and neighboring areas. Residents alleged that the youth, belonging to another community, intentionally violated the sanctity of the temple to hurt religious sentiments. A large number of people gathered at the temple premises, demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrator and strict legal action.

Recognizing the sensitivity of the matter, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sadar Police Station reached the spot with a significant police contingent. The SHO has issued strict orders to ensure the suspect is arrested and brought to the Chamba police station at the earliest. The protesters emphasized that such acts threaten the peaceful co-existence of communities in the region.
Public Apology by the Suspect's Family
In an effort to de-escalate the rising tension, the family members of the accused youth met with the villagers and panchayat representatives. The family expressed deep regret over the incident and issued a formal public apology. They assured the community that the youth's actions were individual and didn't reflect the values of the family or the community. They further promised that no such unpleasant incidents would occur in the future, while following this apology, the administration has appealed to the public to maintain calm and cooperate with the investigation.
