Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes passed away on Monday. He had been ailing for the past one month and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru. According to the information given by the hospital, he died at the age of 80 due to a heart attack.

Oscar Fernandes was considered close to the Gandhi family and has held important responsibilities in the party and the UPA government. Fernandes was also the Road Transport Minister during the UPA government and is currently a Rajya Sabha MP from the party. Oscar Fernandes was also known as Brother Oscar and was close to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. He served as the Union Minister for Transport, Roads and Highways, Labor and Employment in the UPA government. He was a five-time Lok Sabha MP from the Udupi parliamentary constituency of Karnataka and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from the Congress. Being the son of a school teacher, he rose to the highest position of recognition in the Congress party by winning the trust of the Gandhi family. In the year 1980, he was elected MP from the Udupi Lok Sabha seat of Karnataka and after that he reached Parliament after winning elections several times. In 1998, he was made a Rajya Sabha MP by the Congress and after that he was a member of the Upper House.
