Google Security Alert: In view of the increasing incidents of cyber attacks in recent times, Google has issued an important warning to its 2.5 billion (about 250 crores) Gmail users. The company has advised users to immediately change their passwords and activate two-step verification (2SV). The move comes in view of the growing threats from hackers, especially potential attacks by the infamous hacking group ShinyHunters.

ShinyHunters: A major threat of cybercrime

ShinyHunters, which has been active since 2020, has made headlines for its role in several high-profile data breaches. According to SILIVE.com, the group is said to be involved in data breaches at major organizations such as Microsoft, AT&T, Santander and Ticketmaster. The group is notorious for its phishing tactics, in which users are deceived through carefully crafted fake emails. These emails take users to fake login pages, where they share their sensitive information such as passwords or security codes.

Although most of the data stolen by this group was publicly available, Google has warned that ShinyHunters is now planning to make even more aggressive attacks. According to a blog post by Google, the group is preparing to further intensify its extortion strategy by launching a data leak site (DLS).

Google's advice: Increase the security of your account immediately

On August 8, 2025, Google sent an email to potentially affected Gmail users advising them to immediately increase the security of their accounts. The company has specifically emphasized on activating two-step verification. This feature adds an additional layer of security to your account. Under this, it is mandatory to enter a secondary code (such as OTP sent to your phone) in addition to the password to login. With this, even if a hacker knows your password, he cannot access your account.

How to activate two-step verification?

  • Go to Google Account Settings: Log in to your Gmail account and click "Manage your Google Account".
  • Choose the Security tab: Go to the "Security" section in Settings.
  • Turn on 2-Step Verification: Click the "2-Step Verification" option and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Choose a secondary device: You can use your phone number, the Google Authenticator app, or other options.
Why is it so important?

A Gmail account is not just limited to email. It is often used as a login for banking, online shopping, social media, and other important services. If your Gmail account gets hacked, it can put your other services and personal information at risk. A hacked account can not only expose your personal information but can also cause serious problems such as financial loss and identity theft.

Additional tips to stay safe

  • Create a strong password: Create a password that is at least 12 characters long and includes letters, numbers, and special symbols.
  • Beware of phishing emails: Check the sender of the email carefully before clicking on any suspicious links.
  • Check account activity regularly: Check "Your devices" and "Recent activity" in the "Security" section of Google Account.
  • Use a password manager: It helps you store strong and unique passwords.
