The Central Government has officially addressed and dismissed rumors regarding a potential shortage of petrol, diesel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the country. According to official statements, India's fuel reserves are at optimal levels, and the supply chain remains strong. Amid concerns triggered by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that there is no cause for alarm as domestic requirements are well-covered by existing stocks. Following this assurance, the initial surge in panic bookings at gas agencies has Importantly subsided.

Significant Decline in Panic Bookings and Shift to Digital

8 lakh to approximately 77 lakh as of the latest reports. This trend indicates that public anxiety regarding fuel availability is easing. Simultaneously, there has been a notable shift toward digital platforms, with online gas bookings increasing from 84% to 87%. Oil marketing companies had launched specific campaigns encouraging consumers to use digital modes instead of queuing at agencies, a move that has effectively streamlined the distribution process and reduced physical crowding.

Refinery Operations and Domestic Self-Sufficiency

The government has reassured the public that all national oil refineries are operating at high capacity. Officials stated that India maintains a position of self-sufficiency in the production of petrol and diesel for domestic consumption. The Ministry confirmed that adequate crude oil reserves are maintained to handle any short-term global supply fluctuations, while oil companies have further verified that no 'dry-out' incidents—where petrol pumps or LPG distributors run out of stock—have been reported across the country, ensuring that the supply remains consistent at the retail level.

Strict Measures Against Hoarding and Black Marketing

To prevent illegal profiteering during periods of heightened concern, administrative authorities have initiated strict actions against hoarding and black marketing. Intensive raids are being conducted in several states, including Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, to monitor LPG cylinder distribution. Officials from state-run oil companies are performing surprise inspections at gas agencies to ensure transparency. Also, the management of commercial LPG cylinders has been coordinated with 30 state and union territory governments to prioritize distribution. States like Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Bihar have issued specific directives for the allocation of non-domestic LPG in line with central guidelines.

Prioritizing Essential Services and Regulatory Changes

The government’s primary focus remains on securing supply for domestic consumers and essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. A 100% supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been guaranteed. Meanwhile, gas supply for industrial and commercial usage is being regulated at approximately 80% to ensure domestic stability. Also, an amendment to the LPG Control Order now mandates that consumers with active PNG connections must surrender their LPG connections. This regulatory change is intended to optimize the distribution network and ensure equitable access to fuel resources for all citizens.
