Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan's birthday has been celebrated as Teachers' Day since 1962. He wished his students to celebrate the birthday as Teacher's Day. Teachers' Day is celebrated on different dates in more than 100 countries of the world. The first Vice-President of the country, Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in a Brahmin family in Tirumani village, Tamil Nadu. He was fond of reading books since childhood and was greatly influenced by Swami Vivekananda. Radhakrishnan died on 17 April 1975 in Chennai.

Sarvepalli Dr. Radhakrishnan said that the teacher is not the one who forcibly puts the facts in the mind of the student, but the real teacher is the one who prepares him for the challenges of tomorrow. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan believed that only the best minded people in the country should become teachers. Doctor Radhakrishnan's father was against his English reading or going to school. He wanted to make his son a priest. 

However, World Teacher's Day is observed on 5 October. In 1994, UNESCO recognized the celebration of October 5 as World Teachers' Day to appreciate the work of teachers. In Singapore, the first Friday of September is celebrated as Teachers' Day. Whereas in Afghanistan, this day is celebrated only on 5 October. Savitribai Jyotirao Phule is known as the country's first female teacher. She made significant contribution to the education of girls.
