School-college in the state closed for three days

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has issued orders to close all high schools and colleges in the state for 3 days in view of the ongoing hearing in the High Court and the ongoing controversy at various places in the state. The Chief Minister gave this information through his official Twitter handle. He appealed to the students and the school-college management to maintain peace.

Lawyers put forward arguments

Advocate Devdutt Kamat, appearing for Muslim girl students, said that wearing hijab is an important part of Muslim culture. Kamat further said that if some miscreants are creating trouble in this, then it is the duty of the state government to make arrangements to take these girl students to school safely. At the same time, arguing the matter on behalf of the government, the Advocate General said that the institutions in the state have been given the freedom to decide on the uniform of the students. Any students who want exemption in this, they can go to the College Development Committee.

We will do what the constitution says

Hearing the matter, Justice Krishna Dixit said that the court will act on the basis of reason and law and not on any passion or emotion. The court further said that we will do whatever the Constitution says, the Constitution is the Bhagavad Gita for us. The court said that only one decision would apply to all the petitions.

Discussion also took place on Sikhism

During the hearing on the Hijab controversy in the Karnataka High Court, Sikhism was also discussed. The court said on this that the case of Sikhism is an essential religious practice (ERP). Not only Indian, but Canadian and UK courts have also accepted this.

Growing controversy

On the one hand, the hearing on the issue of hijab was going on in the High Court, while on the other hand, the controversy was seen increasing in the PES College of the state. In protest against the arrival of a girl student wearing a hijab, the students started shouting slogans of Jai Shri Ram wearing a saffron gamchha. In response to this, the student also raised slogans of Allah Hu Akbar. At the same time, in the college of Udupi, the girl students wearing hijab started protesting. In response, the students wearing saffron gamchas came in front of them and started shouting slogans. After this the college administration took over the matter.

What is the dispute?

The controversy over the hijab in Karnataka started in January in the city of Udupi. In the city's pre-university college, six girl students were denied entry to the class for wearing hijab. The college administration has attributed this to equality in dress. After this the dispute kept on increasing in many districts of the state. In many institutions, girls started coming wearing hijab, then in protest, students started coming wearing saffron gamcha.

The matter reached the High Court

The girl students filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court after they were stopped from wearing a hijab in the college. The girl students argued that not allowing them to wear the hijab was a violation of their fundamental right under Articles 14 and 25 of the Constitution.
