Mata Kalaratri is also known as Shubhankari, as she brings auspiciousness and prosperity to her devotees’ lives. According to legend, she destroyed demons Shumbha, Nishumbha, and Raktabeej to protect gods and humans.
Once, the three worlds trembled due to their terror. The gods approached Lord Shiva, who requested Goddess Parvati to end them. She assumed the form of Durga and slew Shumbha and Nishumbha.
But Raktabeej was a challenge since he had a boon that every drop of his blood falling on earth would give rise to another demon like him. To defeat him, Goddess Durga assumed the fierce form of Kalaratri. She drank his blood before it touched the ground, ultimately annihilating him and freeing the three worlds from fear.
Her Aarti praises her as Mahakali, the destroyer of evil, the protector from fear, and the one whose power pervades earth and sky. She is described as fierce yet benevolent, removing sorrow, diseases, and hardships from devotees’ lives.
