Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has taken immediate steps to consolidate his majority in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) following Mahayuti's win. Driven by the apprehension of defection, Shinde has moved all his newly elected corporators to the prestigious Taj Lands End, a five-star hotel located in Bandra, while according to sources, all 29 newly elected corporators from Shinde's Shiv Sena who won in the Mumbai BMC elections have arrived at this hotel. These corporators are slated to stay at the five-star hotel for three days. This measure has been implemented to prevent the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) from potentially luring them away, which could disrupt the power dynamics within the BMC. This particular development has further intensified the political stir within the state.

Reasons Behind Shinde's Concern

The precautionary actions taken by the Shinde camp are rooted in concrete reasons. The BMC, a 227-member body, requires a majority of 114 seats. In these elections, the BJP secured 89 seats, while the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde won 29 seats. Consequently, the ruling Mahayuti alliance now holds a total of 118 seats, which is merely four seats more than the required majority of 114. This extremely narrow margin could alter the equations at any given moment. Ahead of the crucial BMC Mayor election, where stakes are exceptionally high and the majority margin is razor-thin, Shinde has chosen to accommodate his newly elected corporators in a hotel, while the primary objective is to prevent any defection or last-minute crossovers that could complicate the control over the municipal body. Uddhav Thackeray's Apology

He expressed regret for not being able to personally campaign for all the. Municipal elections and apologized to the Shiv Sainiks and the public in those municipalities. Thackeray also leveled serious accusations regarding the manner in which the elections were conducted. He stated that the ruling parties fought this election in a 'disgusting' manner, as if it were a matter of life and death for them. He further alleged that many of his party workers were 'tadi par' (externed or banished from the city). Uddhav Thackeray reiterated his desire for Shiv Sena to have the Mayor in Mumbai, a wish that he stated remains strong. He referenced the packed crowds at his rallies in Shivaji Park and claimed that a full attempt was made to eliminate Shiv Sena.
