Sudan News: A drone strike on a mosque in Al-Fasher, the capital of Sudan's North Darfur, early Friday morning spread panic across the region. The attack killed 43 civilians, including children and the elderly. The local medical group, Sudan Doctors Network, claimed the attack was carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The mosque compound erupted in screams and chaos.

Horrifying Scene of the Attack

The attack was so powerful that the bodies of the dead were thrown several feet into the air by the explosion. The Al-Fasher Resistance Committee shared a video on Friday showing a portion of the mosque reduced to rubble, with numerous bodies scattered about. However, the Associated Press (AP) could not independently verify the video. It is unclear which mosque was targeted.

The Sudan Doctors Network reported on "X" that the dead included worshippers, elderly people, and children. The network called the attack a "heinous crime against innocent civilians" and said it demonstrated the RSF's "blatant disregard for human and religious values and international law."

Civil War Between the Sudanese Army and the RSF

The attack is part of the ongoing fierce conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF in Al-Fasher, which has escalated into a full-blown civil war since April 2023. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 40,000 people have been killed and approximately 12 million displaced. Millions are on the verge of starvation. Al-Fasher, the last major stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region, has been the epicenter of the conflict for the past year.

Terror among locals

According to the Darfur Victims Support Organization, local residents heard loud explosions and saw drones early Friday. The Resistance Committee said in a statement on Thursday that the RSF targeted women, the elderly, and unarmed civilians living in displacement camps. While fighting was concentrated in the western and southern parts of the city on Thursday, the brutal attack on the mosque occurred on Friday.

International Concern and Humanitarian Crisis

This attack is one of several in Al-Fasher over the past week. Sudan's civil war has become a source of concern not only locally but also internationally. Human rights organizations have repeatedly drawn attention to the humanitarian crisis caused by this war. The growing number of displaced people and the situation of starvation have pushed Sudan towards a serious disaster.
