Super Overs have been galore in international cricket over the last week or so. To start with India and New Zealand were involved in a humdinger at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. In the third T20I, Rohit Sharma smacked Tim Southee for a couple of sixes to seal the fate of the match. Both teams were locked on 179 runs after 40 overs after Mohammed Shami’s stupendous last over.

In the very next match on Friday, January 31, a similar match took place at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. In that game, the Black Caps got themselves within touching distance. However, Shardul Thakur wreaked havoc in his final over and took the game into the one-over eliminator. This time around, the Kiwis churned out 13 runs off Jasprit Bumrah. But the hosts ended up losing.

In the meantime, the procession of Super Overs continued, this time in women’s cricket. At the Manuka Oval in Canberra, England and Australia dished out an absolute cliff-hanger that went right down to the wire. Batting first, Heather Knight’s women scored 156 on the back of the skipper’s quick-fire 45-ball 78. In the run-chase, the Aussies found themselves in all sorts of trouble.

Despite Beth Mooney’s 65, the hosts strained. But cameos from Annabel Sutherland and Dellisa Kimmince got the game into the one-over eliminator. The English captain smacked Ellyse Perry for two fours to take her team to victory in the second game of the tri-series. In the meantime, Tom Moody, the former Australian cricketer, wants a few amendments to the Super Over rule.

Moody’s suggestions

Generally, the team, batting second in the match, gets to bat first in the Super Over. In such a scenario, Moody wants a separate toss to take place. In all the three matches over the last few days, the chasing teams came out trumps. Moreover, he wants two bowlers to send down three balls each in the eliminator.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “With all these #SuperOvers being played out, I’d like to make two suggestions. A new toss to be conducted for the super over. The bowling side to nominate two bowlers to deliver 3 balls each in the super over. #cricket #foodforthought @ICC,”

Adding to his previous tweet, Moody wrote, “To clarify, bowlers to deliver their 3 deliveries consecutively. #SuperOver,”
