New delhi: Amid a standoff between the central government and Twitter over new information technology rules, officials of the microblogging site presented their stand on preventing misuse of social media before a parliamentary committee headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday. During this, members of the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology asked Twitter why a fine should not be imposed on him for 'violating' the law of the land. He said that the law of the land is paramount, not your policy.

In response, Twitter said that it is complying with the new IT laws. Along with this, he said that an interim Chief Compliance Officer has also been appointed. The committee pointed out that Twitter has been fined in Ireland before.

News agency ANI quoted sources as saying that to a question of the parliamentary committee whether Twitter India follows the law or the country, the representative of Twitter said- "We follow our policies." Members of the Parliamentary Committee asked the representatives of Twitter, who appeared, to file in writing how you have been placed on Twitter India and the executive authority you have to make important policy decisions.

It is worth noting that the central government had earlier this month issued a notice to Twitter giving it the last chance to comply with the new IT rules immediately and warned that the platform will not be exempted from liability under the IT Act if the rules are not followed. Will get

Twitter was summoned on the misuse of the platform

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology had last week summoned Twitter on issues related to misuse of the platform and protection of citizens' rights. Twitter India's Public Policy Manager Shagufta Kamran and Legal Adviser Ayushi Kapoor presented their stand before the committee on Friday.

For the past few days, there has been a standoff between the Center and Twitter on many subjects. A few days back, Twitter had also landed in controversy when it attacked Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat had temporarily removed the verification 'blue tick' from the accounts of several senior functionaries of the organization.

Earlier, Delhi Police had sent a notice to Twitter asking how it labeled the alleged 'Congress Toolkit' against the central government as 'manipulated media'. On May 31, Delhi Police had questioned and answered Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director of Twitter India, in this matter. On May 24, the police had also reached Twitter's offices in Delhi and Gurgaon on the issue of the toolkit.
