Uttar Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone in aviation infrastructure as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport in Jewar. This development officially makes Uttar Pradesh the only state in India to have five international airports. Previously, Kerala held the record with four international airports. According to government officials, this expansion is part of a strategic initiative to transform the state into a global aviation and logistics hub, catering to its vast population and growing economic demands.

Technical Specifications and Investment in Jewar Airport

The Noida International Airport at Jewar is being developed as Asia's largest aviation facility. According to official reports, the first phase of this mega project has been completed with an investment of ₹11,282 crore. The total estimated cost for the entire project is projected to reach ₹29,560 crore upon completion. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak stated that the airport is designed to serve as a primary gateway for Northern India. The facility is expected to handle a massive volume of passenger traffic and cargo, positioning it as a critical component of the regional transport network.

Overview of Uttar Pradesh's Five International Airports

The five international airports now operational in Uttar Pradesh include Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow, Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, Kushinagar International Airport, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya, and the newly inaugurated Noida International Airport in Jewar. Each airport serves a strategic purpose; Kushinagar focuses on the Buddhist tourism circuit, Ayodhya caters to global religious tourism, while Lucknow and Varanasi remain vital commercial gateways. The addition of Jewar provides a massive boost to the National Capital Region's (NCR) aviation capacity.

Comparison with Kerala's Aviation Infrastructure

For years, Kerala was the leading state in terms of international connectivity with four airports: Trivandrum International Airport (established in 1932), Cochin International Airport (1999), Calicut International Airport, and Kannur International Airport (2018). Notably, Cochin International Airport is the world's first fully solar-powered airport. Kerala's aviation model is heavily driven by its large expatriate population in Gulf countries and its thriving tourism industry. Uttar Pradesh has now surpassed Kerala's count, reflecting a rapid scale-up of infrastructure in India's most populous state.

Jewar as a Strategic Aviation Hub for North India

The Jewar airport is strategically located to decongest the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. It's expected to provide smooth international connectivity to several districts in Western Uttar Pradesh, including Aligarh, Agra, Mathura, and Meerut. Officials emphasize that the airport will be integrated with multi-modal logistics parks and industrial clusters, facilitating the export of agricultural and manufactured goods from the region, while the project is seen as a catalyst for regional development and enhanced logistical efficiency across North India.

Infrastructure Integration and Project Scale

According to state authorities, the Noida International Airport is being linked with major transport arteries, including the Delhi-Varanasi High-Speed Rail and various expressways. This integration aims to provide a comprehensive transport ecosystem for both passengers and freight. The subsequent phases of the airport's development plan to increase the number of runways and expand terminal capacity, aiming to make it one of the highest-capacity airports globally. The project underscores the state's focus on enhancing air connectivity to drive socio-economic growth.
