Donald Trump News - US takes a tough stand, 'Trump will not come to India for Quad summit'

Donald Trump News: The New York Times (NYT) on Saturday made a sensational claim that US President Donald Trump has cancelled his plans to visit India for the Quad summit later this year. The report, titled 'The Nobel Prize and a tense phone call: How the Trump-Modi relationship deteriorated', quoted people familiar with Trump's schedule as saying, "After telling Modi that he would visit India for the Quad summit later this year, Trump is no longer planning to visit India." There has been no official comment from either the US or India on this claim.

Beginning of tension in Trump-Modi relations

According to the report, the rift in the relationship between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi began when Trump repeatedly claimed that he had resolved the four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan in May. India strongly denied the claim, making it clear that the ceasefire was only through direct talks between India and Pakistan, and the US had no role in it.

According to NYT, while returning from the G7 summit on June 17, Trump had a phone conversation with Modi for about 35 minutes. During this, Trump once again claimed that the credit for ending the military tension between India and Pakistan goes to him. Not only this, he even said that Pakistan is going to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The report further stated that Trump's statement indirectly indicated that Modi should also nominate him. However, India repeatedly reiterated that the US had no role in the India-Pakistan ceasefire and also rejected Trump's claim of interference. Modi's refusal to discuss the issue of Nobel Prize and rejecting Trump's proposal further increased the tension between the two leaders.

Trump's repeated claim and White House's silence

NYT has written that Trump has repeated the claim more than 40 times on public forums since May 10 that he stopped the India-Pakistan conflict. On the other hand, the White House did not share any official information about the June 17 phone call, which has added more mystery to the issue.

Tariff dispute increased the tension

The report also mentioned that the Trump administration imposed an additional duty of 25 percent on India for buying Russian oil. Experts believe that the move was not only to target Russia, but was part of a strategy to put pressure on India in particular. According to the NYT, Trump, disappointed with the tariff talks, tried to contact Modi several times, but the Indian Prime Minister did not respond to his requests.

In response, India has started looking for alternative markets. This ongoing tussle between India and the US over tariffs is further complicating the trade relations between the two countries.

Quad summit and future uncertainty

The Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue), which includes the US, India, Japan and Australia, is an important platform for promoting cooperation and security in the Indo-Pacific region. The news of Trump's cancellation of his India visit has also raised questions about the future of this platform. Although there is no official confirmation on this claim yet, it is clear that the growing tension between Trump and Modi can affect the diplomatic and trade relations of the two countries.
