Virat Kohli has announced to step down as the captain of the T20 format. There was talk of his removal since the England tour, but initially the BCCI kept denying it. Kohli himself announced by tweeting a letter on Thursday that he would step down from the captaincy of this format after the T20 World Cup. Now Rohit Sharma can be made the captain in this format.

Kohli wrote in the letter – thank you to everyone who supported the journey

Kohli wrote in the letter, 'I have been extremely fortunate to not only get the opportunity to represent India, but also to captain it to the best of my ability. I would like to thank every single person who supported me on my journey as the captain of the Indian cricket team. I could not have done this without the boys of the team, the support staff, the selection committee, the coach and every Indian praying for our victory.

'I need a little space'

He also gave the reason for leaving the captaincy. Wrote, 'I understand that work load is very important. I have been playing in all three formats for the last 8-9 years and have also been captaining continuously for 5-6 years. I am feeling that I need a little bit of space to fully prepare myself to captain Team India in Tests and ODIs. As the captain of T20, I have given my everything to the team. I will continue my contribution to the T20 team as a batsman going forward as well.

Discussed the decision with Shastri and Rohit

He wrote that it definitely takes time to come to such a decision. After long discussions with Ravi bhai, Rohit and my close friends, a very important part of team leadership, I have decided to step down from the captaincy of this format after the T20 World Cup. I have spoken to BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, Secretary Jay Shah and all the selectors about this. Kohli wrote that I will continue to serve Indian cricket and Indian cricket team with all my might.
