The Central Government has officially appointed Anurag Jain, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1989 batch from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog. This significant appointment was confirmed on Wednesday following the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Anurag Jain will serve in this prestigious position for a tenure of two years. According to the official order, his appointment will be governed by the same terms and conditions that were applicable to his predecessor in the role of CEO.
A Distinguished Career in Administration
Anurag Jain is widely recognized as a highly skilled administrator with a career spanning nearly four decades. Throughout his extensive service, he has held numerous critical positions within both the Central Government and the State Government of Madhya Pradesh, while his professional journey includes serving as the Secretary in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, as well as the Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). His experience at the highest levels of governance is further highlighted by his tenure as a Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister Office (PMO).
In addition to these roles, Jain has served as the Vice Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation. His foundational experience in regional administration includes serving as a District Collector and as the Secretary to the Chief Minister in Madhya Pradesh. This diverse range of roles has equipped him with a deep understanding of both grassroots implementation and high-level policy formulation.
Vision for NITI Aayog
Throughout his career, Anurag Jain has been instrumental in various policy and administrative initiatives, particularly in the sectors of infrastructure development, industrial growth, and governance reforms. As the CEO of NITI Aayog, which serves as the premier public policy think tank of the Government of India, he will be responsible for overseeing efforts to promote cooperative and competitive federalism. Academic Excellence and Background
Born on August 11, 1965, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Anurag Jain demonstrated exceptional academic brilliance from a young age. Tech degree in Electrical Engineering in 1986. Notably, he secured the second rank in his batch at IIT. Following his engineering studies, he chose to enter the civil services and successfully cleared the UPSC examination in 1988, joining the IAS. He further enhanced his qualifications by obtaining a Master's degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University in the United States.
Transition in Madhya Pradesh
Prior to this central appointment, Anurag Jain was serving as the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh. With his move to the central government, the position of Chief Secretary in Madhya Pradesh has been filled by Ashok Barnwal, a senior IAS officer of the 1991 batch. Tech in Mining Engineering and a Master's degree in Public Policy and Management.
