Allegations of Corruption and Money Laundering
According to reports from the investigation unit, Asif Mahmud is accused of engaging in large-scale corruption during his tenure as the Sports and Youth Affairs Advisor in the interim government. The allegations suggest that there were significant irregularities in the awarding of contracts and the process of appointments within his department, while Plus, the authorities are investigating claims that Mahmud was involved in the extortion of money, which was subsequently sent abroad through illegal channels. It has been revealed that four other individuals are also allegedly involved in these corrupt practices alongside him.
Role in the July Uprising
Asif Mahmud Bhuiyan was one of the most prominent faces of the July rebellion against the Sheikh Hasina administration in 2024. Alongside Nahid Islam, he led the student protests that eventually turned violent towards the end of July. The unrest culminated on August 5, 2024, when Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and flee the country. Following the collapse of the Hasina government, an interim administration was formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Asif Mahmud was appointed as the Minister (Advisor) for Youth and Sports, a position he held for approximately 16 months. During the protests, Sheikh Hasina had alleged that these student leaders were being funded by the United States to destabilize her government.
Controversies and Background
The 28 year old Asif Mahmud was born in the Comilla district and rose to prominence through student politics at Dhaka University. However, his tenure in the interim government wasn't without controversy. In March 2025, he faced severe criticism when it was revealed that he had awarded a departmental contract to his own father, leading to allegations of nepotism and causing embarrassment for the government. Also, he was involved in a security scare at an airport when he was found carrying a firearm, which further complicated his standing within the administration. Currently, Asif and Nahid Islam operate the National Citizen Party. The investigation into his financial dealings has been initiated under the current government influenced by Tarique Rahman, signaling a rigorous crackdown on alleged misconduct during the transitional period.
