If you're planning to visit a bank today, which is October 19, to complete your essential financial tasks, it's crucial to check the bank holiday list before stepping out of your home. According to the bank holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India, bank branches will remain closed across 13 states in the country today. These states include major regions like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, among several others. However, there is some relief for citizens in other parts of the country as banks will remain open and fully functional in states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. So, before heading to a bank branch, checking the holiday status specific to your state is essential to avoid any inconvenience.

Which states have bank closures today

As per the official calendar released by the Reserve Bank of India, bank branches will remain closed in multiple states on October 19 due to major and auspicious festivals such as Dussehra, Mahashtami, Mahanavami, Ayudha Puja, Durga Puja, and Vijayadashami. The complete and official list of states observing a holiday today includes Tripura, Mizoram, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Nagaland, West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand. In all these 13 states, bank branches belonging to both the public sector and the private sector will remain closed for the day.

This holiday covers all major banks operating across the country. Public sector banks such as the State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, and Canara Bank, alongside major private sector lenders like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, will keep their branches shut in these regions. Customers of all these financial institutions won't be able to physically visit their local branches today for transactions or other banking services, while on the other hand, all bank branches in Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and the remaining states of the country will operate normally, and bank employees will carry out their regular operations.

Other days when banks will remain closed in October

According to the Reserve Bank of India holiday calendar for the month of October, banks will observe holidays on various upcoming dates across different parts of the country due to regional festivals and occasions. Reviewing this comprehensive schedule can help you plan your financial activities accordingly: On October 20, which falls on a Tuesday, banks will remain closed across the entire country, except in Manipur, on the occasion of Vijayadashami and Dussehra. On the very next day, October 21, which is a Wednesday, banks will be closed in Tripura, Karnataka, Sikkim, Assam, Kerala, and West Bengal due to Vijayadashami and Durga Puja celebrations.

Following this, on October 22, which is a Thursday, banks will observe a holiday exclusively in the state of Sikkim for Durga Puja, also known as Dasain. On the consecutive day, October 23, which falls on a Friday, banks will remain closed in Sikkim once again on account of Durga Puja or Dasain. On top of that, on October 24, which is a Saturday, bank branches nationwide will remain closed as it's the second Saturday of the month. As part of the weekly holiday routine, banks will remain shut across the entire country on Sunday, October 26. On this very same date, October 26, which is a Monday, a regional holiday will be observed in Tripura, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, and Srinagar on account of Lakshmi Puja, Accession Day, and Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti.

Later in the month, on October 29, which is a Thursday, banks will remain closed in the state of Himachal Pradesh to mark the auspicious festival of Karva Chauth. Towards the end of the month, on October 31, which falls on a Saturday, bank branches will remain shut in the state of Gujarat to commemorate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti.

Services you can still access despite bank closures

Even if bank branches remain completely closed in your state today, there is no need to panic or worry. Despite the physical branches being shut, customers can rely on digital mediums to fulfill their essential banking requirements. Customers can typically complete their important financial tasks comfortably from home by utilizing UPI, mobile banking applications, internet banking portals, and automated teller machines spread across the country. These digital services remain completely unaffected by bank holidays and continue to operate smoothly on a round-the-clock basis.

However, it's vital to keep in mind that due to the closure of physical bank branches, tasks related to cheque clearances and specialized services that require physical presence inside a bank branch may experience some delays. You may need to wait until the banks reopen for such specific procedures. Because of this, if you must visit a bank branch for any urgent matter, it's strongly advised to confirm the holiday status and official operating hours of your respective bank before leaving your home, ensuring that you don't return empty-handed and waste your valuable time.
