During a formal press conference held to welcome the new members, Kiren Rijiju expressed his enthusiasm about the growing influence of the BJP in the state. He noted that the decision of these eight MLAs to leave the UDP and join the BJP is a testament to the transformative governance under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while the Union Minister highlighted that the progress witnessed in the Northeast over the last 12 years has fundamentally changed the political landscape, moving it towards a focus on development and connectivity. The Eight MLAs Joining the BJP
The group of eight legislators who have transitioned to the BJP includes several prominent figures from Meghalaya's political sphere. The names of the MLAs are Lakhmen Rymbui, Pius Marwein, Kyrmen Shylla, Mayralborn Syiem, Methodius Dkhar, Ollan Singh Suin, Balajied Kupar Synrem, and Sinsar Lyngdoh Thabah. Their collective move is expected to provide the BJP with a much stronger footing in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Profile of Lakhmen Rymbui
BJP Spokesperson Sambit Patra provided detailed insights into the backgrounds of the new members, particularly highlighting Lakhmen Rymbui. Rymbui is a seasoned politician and a three-time MLA, having won elections in 2008, 2018, and 2023. His administrative experience is extensive; from 2018 to 2023, he served as a minister overseeing critical portfolios such as Education, Forest and Environment, Home, and Police. Since 2025, he has been serving as the Minister for Education, Revenue and Disaster Management, and Law.
