In a tragic series of natural disasters following the recent events in Nepal, Eastern China has been struck by a severe landslide that has claimed lives and left several others missing. The disaster was triggered by the relentless torrential rains brought upon the region by Tropical Cyclone Saudel, which has been battering the area for several days. According to the latest reports, at least 2 people have been confirmed dead, while search and rescue operations are underway for 10 individuals who remain missing. State media reported on Sunday that the landslide has caused extensive damage, with approximately 12 houses being completely destroyed or severely damaged in the affected zone.
Devastation in Suichuan County
The local authorities issued a statement detailing the incident that occurred on Saturday morning. A significant portion of a village in Suichuan County, located within the Jiangxi province, was washed away by the force of the landslide. As soon as the news of the disaster reached the emergency services, rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the site. To prevent further loss of life and mitigate the risks of subsequent landslides, local residents were swiftly moved to safer locations. The rescue teams worked tirelessly through the debris to locate survivors. They managed to pull out one person from the rubble, but unfortunately, that individual was found dead. However, there was a glimmer of hope as two other people were rescued alive from the debris. These two survivors are reported to be in stable condition and are doing well now. The state broadcaster CCTV further updated on Sunday morning that rescuers had located another one of the missing persons, but sadly, this individual had also passed away.
The Path of Tropical Cyclone Saudel
According to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua, the destruction was fueled by the movement of Cyclone Saudel. The cyclone first made landfall in Zhejiang province twice on August 28. Following its path through the region, it struck the Fujian province for a third time on Thursday, this time as a tropical storm. The impact of the storm has been felt across multiple provinces, as Zhejiang and Fujian are both neighboring provinces of Jiangxi, where the landslide occurred, while the continuous heavy rainfall over several days has saturated the ground, leading to the catastrophic soil failure that resulted in the landslide.
Widespread Damage and Mass Evacuations
The scale of the disaster extends beyond Suichuan County. In Fujian province, local officials reported that several people are missing following the days of heavy rain. While the exact number of missing persons in that specific area isn't yet clear, the physical damage is evident. In Huating town, located within Putian City, more than 100 houses have collapsed due to the severe weather conditions. The situation worsened on Thursday afternoon when water began to flow over the top of an embankment. Under the intense pressure of the rising water, the embankment eventually breached, leading to flash floods that submerged several villages and left many residents stranded. In response to the growing danger, authorities launched a massive evacuation effort. By Friday night, approximately 600,000 people had been moved to safe locations from high-risk areas near the sea and on land in Fujian province. This incident follows closely after a terrifying landslide in Nepal, which had partially blocked the flow of a river, highlighting the ongoing regional struggle with extreme weather and geological instability.
