China News - China's Second Most Powerful General He Weidong Removed Amid Corruption Scandal
A significant shake-up has occurred in China amidst ongoing discussions about Xi Jinping's successor. He Weidong, who held the second most powerful position in the Chinese military, has been removed from his post. Weidong, the Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) – a body chaired by Xi Jinping himself – was also a member of the Communist Party of China's Politburo, from which he has now been expelled.
The government stated that Weidong was removed due to serious allegations of corruption. There has been no comment from Weidong regarding the decision so far. His dismissal comes at a critical time, as a crucial annual meeting concerning the government and the party is scheduled for the end of this month.
More Generals Suspended
According to the South China Morning Post, in addition to He Weidong, seven other army generals have been suspended on corruption charges. Born in Fujian, China, in 1957, He Weidong joined the military after completing his education at the Nanjing Military School, while his career saw a rapid ascent after Xi Jinping came to power in 2012. In 2013, he was appointed commander of the Jiangsu Military District, followed by commander of the. Shanghai Garrison Command in 2014, and commander of the Western Theater Command Ground Force in 2016. By 2018, he secured a central-level posting and was given command of the Eastern Theater Command.
In 2022, Weidong was elevated to the crucial role of Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission and was also appointed a member of the Politburo. He was once considered a potential successor to President Xi Jinping. However, reports of a deteriorating relationship emerged in 2024, leading to his disappearance and now, his official removal.
