In a significant administrative move, the Delhi government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the renaming of several prominent metro stations, hospitals, and public landmarks across the national capital. This decision, according to the Chief Minister, has been taken to honor the identity of Delhi and respect the public sentiments of its citizens. The renaming initiative covers various key locations, including the Rohini West Metro Station, which will now be known as the Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital Metro Station. On top of that, an under-construction sports complex in Begumpur, Rohini, will be named after the former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna recipient, the late Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as the Atal Khel Parisar.

State Naming Authority Approves Proposals

The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting of the State Naming Authority (SNA) held recently at the Delhi Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who also serves as the Chairperson of the SNA. The proposals for renaming these public assets were discussed in detail and received unanimous approval from the authority. The meeting saw the participation of several top-ranking officials, including the Chief Secretary of Delhi, the Secretary of the Urban Development Department, the Managing Director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), and the Director of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), among other senior representatives.

Honoring Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Rohini Sector 33

One of the major highlights of the meeting was the proposal regarding the newly constructed sports complex located in Begumpur, specifically in Sector 33 of Rohini. The Authority unanimously decided that this facility would be named the Atal Khel Parisar. To further honor the legacy of the former Prime Minister, the proposal to install a statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee within the complex premises was also approved. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a legendary figure in Indian politics who provided a new direction to development, democratic values, and national unity. She emphasized that associating the sports complex with his name would serve as a great source of inspiration for the younger generation.

Renaming of Rohini Metro Stations

The State Naming Authority also deliberated on the renaming of metro stations to better reflect the landmarks they serve. It was decided that the Rohini West Metro Station would be renamed the Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital Metro Station. This change is intended to highlight the proximity of the major healthcare institution named after the architect of the Indian Constitution. Also, to make the identification of stations clearer for commuters and to streamline the naming convention, the Rohini East Metro Station has been renamed simply as the Rohini Metro Station. The Chief Minister noted that the contribution of Bharat Ratna Dr, while bhimrao Ambedkar is immortal in the social and constitutional history of the country, and naming public places after him sends a message of equality, justice, and social empowerment.

New Names for Hospitals and Local Landmarks

The renaming drive extended to healthcare facilities and geographical landmarks as well. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta informed that the hospital currently under construction in Jwalapuri will be named the Baba Ramdevji Maharaj Hospital. In another move to incorporate local identity, the name of the Dwarka Metro Station was reviewed. The Authority approved the proposal to rename it the Dwarka-Kakrola Metro Station, aiming to establish the geographical and social identity of the area more clearly. On top of that, the well-known Britannia Chowk located in Shakurpur has been renamed Ashwini Chopra (Minna) Chowk. The Chief Minister stated that honoring personalities who have made significant contributions to society and public life is a priority for the government, as such decisions strengthen public memory.

Commitment to Cultural and National Values

Reflecting on these changes, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the renamed sites are symbols of Delhi's diverse cultural identity, social consciousness, and national heritage. She remarked that Delhi isn't just an administrative capital but also represents the cultural, social, and historical consciousness of the entire nation. The government remains committed to strengthening Delhi's historical and cultural identity alongside its physical development. According to the Chief Minister, it's the government's responsibility to honor inspiring personalities, local identities, and national values through the naming of important public places and institutions. Such decisions, she added, serve to connect future generations with their history, heritage, and the great leaders who serve as their sources of inspiration.
