The race for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 playoffs has taken a dramatic turn following Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) recent defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). While the loss has certainly complicated their path to the knockout stages, the defending champions aren't out of the running yet. There is still a viable mathematical scenario that could see Ruturaj Gaikwad's men secure a spot in the final four. As the tournament reaches its business end, fans are closely calculating the points and net run rates to see if their favorite team can make the cut.

The Current Playoff Standings

In the IPL 2026 season, there are four available slots for the playoffs. As of now, three teams have already confirmed their participation in the next round. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was the first team to secure their playoff ticket, showing dominant form throughout the group stages. Following them, Sunrisers Hyderabad confirmed their spot after a crucial victory over Chennai Super Kings on May 18. This victory for SRH not only guaranteed their own progression but also confirmed the playoff berth for Gujarat Titans (GT). With three spots filled, only one position remains vacant, leading to an intense battle among the remaining contenders.

The Path for Chennai Super Kings

For Chennai Super Kings, the most straightforward way to enter the playoffs was to win both of their final group stage matches, while however, that plan was disrupted when they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite this setback, the doors aren't closed. Currently, CSK has 13 points from 12 matches and occupies the 6th position on the points table. To qualify, they must first win their final group match against Gujarat Titans. A victory in this match would take their total to 14 points. However, reaching 14 points alone might not be enough, as they will need several other results to go in their favor.

External Factors and Rival Scenarios

CSK's qualification depends heavily on the performance of other teams. The following conditions must be met for CSK to advance:

  • Punjab Kings (PBKS) must lose their final group match, while
  • Rajasthan Royals (RR) must lose both of their remaining matches or at least one of them. If RR loses both, they will stay at 12 points.

The Importance of Net Run Rate

One of the biggest challenges for Chennai Super Kings is their net run rate, while following the loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK's net run rate has slipped into the negative zone. That's why, simply winning the final match against Gujarat Titans might not suffice. They need to win by a margin that Importantly improves their net run rate to stay ahead of teams like Rajasthan Royals or Punjab Kings if they also finish on 14 points. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings need to win their last match and hope Rajasthan Royals lose at least one of their next two, while rajasthan Royals have the simplest path: winning both of their remaining matches will guarantee them a spot in the playoffs without depending on any other team's results.
