The central government is preparing for significant changes to the Agniveer scheme, which is being viewed as a major Diwali gift for the youth of the country. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh has shared crucial information regarding the future and service tenure of Agniveers. According to the new proposal, the government is considering granting a 2-year additional extension to all Agniveers after they complete their initial four-year service tenure. During this extended period, they will be able to continue their services in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Consideration for marriage permission
This change for Agniveers isn't limited to the service tenure alone. The government is also considering allowing Agniveers to get married during this two-year additional service period. This move is seen as a significant effort to balance the personal lives and professional careers of the Agniveers.
Positive assessment of performance
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh described the Agniveer scheme as a win-win solution for both the Army and the Agniveers. He stated that it was decided at the inception of the scheme that a re-assessment would be conducted after four years. During this recent review, the performance of the Agniveers was found to be highly satisfactory. Their performance in various military operations has also been considered positive. Based on this, the idea of providing them with an additional two-year service tenure has emerged.
Opportunity to join the regular army
According to Rajesh Kumar Singh, after completing the two-year extension, those Agniveers who are interested in joining permanent service will be given a special opportunity. Agniveers who meet the prescribed eligibility and operational standards will be offered a chance to join the regular Army. This means that Agniveers could get another opportunity to enter regular military service based on their merit and performance.
Additional time to prove capability
The Defence Secretary emphasized that this change will provide Agniveers with additional time to prove their capabilities and skills. On the other hand, the Army will also get an opportunity to retain well-trained and high-performing soldiers for a longer duration. He termed this as a Diwali gift for the Agniveers.
Major announcement by the CDS
