The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced an extension for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists across several key regions, including Delhi, Punjab, Telangana, and Karnataka. This decision, made on Wednesday, aims to provide more time for the administrative machinery to ensure that the electoral rolls are comprehensive, accurate, and fully updated. The revision process is a critical component of the democratic framework, ensuring that every eligible citizen is included in the voting process while removing discrepancies and outdated information.

Revised Schedule for Delhi

In the national capital, Delhi, the timeline for the door-to-door verification process conducted by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) has seen a significant shift. Previously, the deadline for BLOs to complete their physical verification of households was set for July 29. Under the new directive from the Election Commission, this work will now continue until August 8. This extension allows officers more time to reach every household and verify the details of residents. Consequently, the publication of the draft voter list, which was originally scheduled for August 5, has now been pushed back to August 17. This draft list is essential as it allows citizens to check their names and file any claims or objections before the final list is prepared.

Changes in Punjab's SIR Timeline

Punjab has also seen a revision in its Special Intensive Revision schedule, while the deadline for the door-to-door verification by BLOs in the state has been extended from July 24 to August 3. This adjustment ensures that the ground-level verification is thorough and leaves no room for errors. Following this, the publication of the draft voter list in Punjab will now take place on August 13, instead of the earlier planned date of July 31. The final publication of the voter list, which marks the conclusion of the revision process, has been moved from October 10 to October 12. These changes are designed to accommodate the logistical requirements of the state's electoral office and ensure a clean voter database.

Updates for Telangana and Karnataka

The Election Commission has also updated the schedules for Telangana and Karnataka to align with the administrative needs of the revision process. In Telangana, the draft voter list is now set to be published on August 10, with the final voter list scheduled for release on October 12. In Karnataka, the door-to-door verification by BLOs will now be conducted until August 8. The draft voter list for Karnataka will be published on August 17, moving from the previous date of August 5. Also, the final voter list for the state will now be released on October 19, instead of the original date of October 7. These extensions provide the necessary window for a meticulous review of the voter data collected during the field visits.

Broader Context of the SIR Campaign

It's important to note that the Election Commission had already extended the SIR schedules for Haryana and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. All these states—Delhi, Punjab, Telangana, Karnataka, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh—are part of the third phase of the Special Intensive Revision, which commenced on May 14. The ECI has stated that once this third phase is concluded, the SIR process will be finished in almost all states and Union Territories across India, with the exceptions of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The primary reason for these repeated adjustments in the schedule is the need for better coordination between officials and resources to ensure that the voter lists are 100 percent accurate and up-to-date. The Commission has cited various administrative and technical reasons for these shifts in the past, emphasizing that the integrity of the voter list is paramount for conducting fair elections.
