The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has officially extended its support to the Delhi government's ambitious new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy. While acknowledging the significant hurdles involved in transitioning from traditional petrol and diesel engines to electric mobility, the association emphasized that this shift is an unavoidable necessity for the future of the automotive industry. The Delhi government is currently accelerating its efforts to promote electric vehicles over the next few years, a move that has now gained the backing of the primary body representing auto dealers in India.

Challenges and Long-term Benefits

FADA has pointed out that moving away from internal combustion engines won't be a smooth process. In the initial stages, manufacturers, dealers, and consumers are expected to face various challenges. However, the association maintains that this transformation will prove beneficial for all stakeholders in the long run. S. Vigneshwar, the President of FADA, stated that the era of electric vehicles is imminent, and the entire automobile sector must prepare itself for this inevitable change. He highlighted that merely manufacturing new electric vehicles is insufficient; the industry must also focus on building a solid charging infrastructure and an efficient service network.

Focus on Infrastructure and Technical Training

To ensure the success of the EV transition, FADA stressed the urgent need to expand charging facilities across the region. Plus, providing specialized training to technicians working at dealerships is considered a top priority. Since the service and repair requirements for electric vehicles differ Importantly from traditional vehicles, there is a pressing need for new tools, equipment, and technical knowledge. FADA believes that if the government and automobile companies collaborate effectively, the transition can be made much smoother for everyone involved.

Delhi Government's Strategic Roadmap

The Delhi government's new EV policy outlines a clear roadmap for phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles, while according to the plan, starting from April 2027, priority will be given to new electric three-wheelers. Following this, the government intends to gradually stop the sale of new petrol-powered two-wheelers from April 2028. This strategic timeline has sparked intense discussions within the auto industry, forcing companies with limited electric portfolios to reconsider and overhaul their current business strategies.

Rising Demand and FADA's Support Initiatives

The demand for electric vehicles in India is on a steady upward trajectory. In June 2026, the share of EVs in total vehicle sales exceeded 10 percent, with electric scooters and bikes seeing particularly high demand. Major automotive players are responding by launching several new models in this segment. To assist dealers during this transition, FADA has announced that it will launch various programs focused on technician training, the installation of charging stations, and raising public awareness about the benefits of electric vehicles.
