Chennamma, the wife of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, passed away on Saturday at the age of 85. She breathed her last at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, where she had been undergoing treatment for several days. Her demise marks the end of an era for the Deve Gowda family, as she was considered the backbone of the household and a silent force behind the former Prime Minister's long and illustrious political career.

Medical Condition and Hospitalization

Chennamma had been facing health challenges related to respiratory issues, while she was admitted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru on July 15 after complaining of severe breathing difficulties. Given the seriousness of her condition, she was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). A team of specialist doctors was assigned to monitor her health around the clock, while specifically, her treatment was being supervised by Dr. Satyanarayana. Despite the best efforts of the medical team and the administration of advanced treatments, her health continued to deteriorate over the past few days. On Saturday, her condition became critical, and she eventually passed away.

Family and Early Life

Chennamma hailed from Hirehalli in the Muttige district of Hassan taluk. She was the eldest daughter of her parents and took on significant responsibilities from a young age. She had completed her SSLC education before her marriage. On May 25, 1954, she was married to HD Deve Gowda. Over the decades, the couple built a large and influential family. They're survived by four sons and two daughters. Her sons are HD Revanna, HD Balakrishna, HD Ramesh Gowda, and HD Kumaraswamy, while her daughters are Shailaja and Anusuya, while as the eldest daughter in her own parental home, she had also played a vital role in raising her four younger brothers and three younger sisters.

A Pillar of Support

Throughout HD Deve Gowda's political journey, which saw him rise from local politics to becoming the Prime Minister of India, Chennamma remained a steadfast pillar of support. She took over the entire responsibility of the household and the upbringing of their six children, allowing Deve Gowda to focus entirely on his political commitments without the burden of domestic worries. She was often described as an ideal housewife who prioritized the education and values of her children, ensuring they were well-settled in their respective lives.

The 2001 Acid Attack Incident

One of the most harrowing chapters in her life occurred in February 2001. While returning from offering prayers at a temple in Hardanhalli, Chennamma was the victim of a shocking acid attack. The incident left her with severe injuries, causing deep concern across the state and the country. However, showing immense resilience, she underwent extensive medical treatment and eventually recovered from the physical trauma of the attack.

Security and Final Rites

Following the news of her passing, a large number of dignitaries, political leaders, and relatives began arriving at Manipal Hospital to pay their last respects. Anticipating a massive gathering of Janata Dal (Secular) or JDS workers and supporters, the Bengaluru police have Notably increased security measures around the hospital premises. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh personally visited the site to inspect the security arrangements and ensure that the situation remains orderly as the family prepares for the final rites.
