In a deeply chilling incident that has shaken the Indian-American community, US Lawmaker Raja Krishnamoorthi became visibly emotional while recalling an alleged conspiracy to carry out a mass shooting targeting the Indian community in the United States. The Congressman recounted how a major tragedy was averted and his family narrowly escaped when an attempt was made to attack a prominent Hindu temple located in Aurora, Illinois. Krishnamoorthi shared that at the very moment the attack was attempted, his family members were present inside the temple premises. This alarming situation has drawn widespread attention to the growing concerns over hate crimes and targeted violence against minority communities in the country.
Detailing the harrowing experience, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi expressed his profound shock and gratitude. He stated that to this day, he doesn't know how the attacker's gun suddenly jammed, nor does he understand how his family and other innocent people present at the temple managed to escape safely. Krishnamoorthi admitted that he isn't even certain how he happened to be present at that location at that exact time, but he firmly believes there was a higher purpose behind it—allowing him to come forward and speak out against hatred. He emphasized that combating hate has now become one of the foremost and defining purposes of his life.
Responding swiftly to the grave threat, law enforcement authorities apprehended a nineteen-year-old individual in connection with the conspiracy. The accused has been identified as nineteen-year-old Alexandros Papourakis. He's facing serious criminal charges, including making terrorist threats and unlawful possession of weapons while posing a severe threat to public safety, while according to the allegations, Papourakis had plotted a mass shooting targeting the Sri Venkateswara Swami Balaji Temple in Aurora, near Chicago. This revered temple is regularly visited by a large number of people of Indian origin for worship and community gatherings. Fortunately, when the accused attempted to open fire, his weapon malfunctioned and jammed, thereby preventing what could have been a catastrophic massacre. Legal proceedings against the accused are currently underway.
Voicing Deep Concern on Social Media
Shortly after the incident came to light, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi took to the social media platform X to voice his profound anxiety and condemnation. In his post, he wrote that last Sunday, he and his family were offering prayers at their Hindu temple in Aurora when a white supremacist attempted to carry out a mass shooting specifically targeting Indian Americans, while krishnamoorthi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the vigilant individuals who helped avert the unfolding tragedy. At the same time, he stressed the urgent need for collective unity to combat the pervasive hatred that placed the lives of so many innocent people in grave jeopardy.
Describing the alleged conspiracy as deeply disturbing, Krishnamoorthi said he was utterly shocked by the attempt to execute a mass shooting targeting Indian Americans at the Aurora Hindu temple. He reiterated that his family was inside the temple at the time the attack was attempted last Sunday. Meanwhile, the Congressman extended his appreciation to the coworkers of the accused who acted responsibly and alerted law enforcement agencies about the plot. He also commended the law enforcement officers who rushed to the scene and took immediate action. He issued a stern warning that threats of violence fueled by hatred must never be ignored or brushed aside under any circumstances.
US Lawmakers Demand Action from FBI and Department of Justice
The alarming incident has prompted strong reactions from other prominent members of the US Congress, while on Friday, US India Caucus co-chairs Ro Khanna and Rich McCormick strongly condemned the alleged mass shooting plot. Both lawmakers jointly urged the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to take decisive action regarding the matter. They emphasized that the rising tide of threats and hate against Hindu Americans and Indian Americans requires immediate and serious attention. The lawmakers demanded that the incident be investigated as a potential federal hate crime and that all necessary charges be brought forward based on concrete evidence.
India Expresses Deep Concern and Urges Protection
The government of India has also expressed deep concern over the attempted attack on the Hindu temple in the United States. Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the media briefing, stating unequivocally that the incident is a matter of profound concern for India and the Indian community abroad. He pointed out that this disturbing event highlights the rising incidents of hate crimes and racial discrimination directed against the Indian diaspora in the United States.
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that India has taken careful note of the swift actions initiated by US law enforcement agencies following the incident. India has strongly urged the United States government to ensure the absolute safety and security of all Indian citizens residing within its borders. The security and well-being of the Indian community remain a paramount priority, and authorities must ensure that such hate-driven incidents are strictly prevented from recurring in the future.
