The political atmosphere in Punjab has intensified following a controversial video shared by former cricketer and current Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a direct and scathing attack on the MP, accusing him of a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the state, while baltej Pannu, the chief spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Party, has spearheaded this criticism, alleging that Harbhajan Singh shared a video on social media that didn't even originate from Punjab. According to the spokesperson, the footage in question was actually from Rajasthan, yet it was presented in a manner that suggested the incident took place within Punjab's borders.
Allegations of Misleading Content and Lack of Verification
Baltej Pannu stated that by posting the video without proper verification, Harbhajan Singh has raised unnecessary questions about the functioning and integrity of the Punjab Police. The AAP spokesperson emphasized that such actions are part of a larger conspiracy to defame the state on a public platform. He argued that a person of Harbhajan Singh's stature, who holds a significant public office, should have exercised greater responsibility before sharing content that could negatively impact the reputation of the state and its law enforcement agencies. The party maintains that this wasn't a mere oversight but a calculated move to create a false narrative about the situation in Punjab.
Police Action and Data Collection
The controversy has moved beyond political rhetoric, as Baltej Pannu revealed that legal consequences might follow. He informed the media that the Punjab Police is currently in the process of collecting data on everyone who shared or posted the misleading video, including Harbhajan Singh. Once the data collection is complete, the authorities intend to proceed with further legal action. Pannu suggested that some Members of Parliament who have recently shifted their allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are actively working to malign Punjab's image. He expressed concern that social media is being used as a tool to spread misinformation for political gains.
The Global Context of the Drug Menace
Addressing the underlying theme of the video, which reportedly touched upon the issue of drugs, Baltej Pannu remarked that drug abuse is a global challenge and not limited to any single region. To provide context, he mentioned that even a developed nation like the United States had to launch specialized operations, such as Operation Hard Ball, to combat the drug problem. By citing this example, the AAP spokesperson aimed to highlight that the issue is widespread and requires a collective effort rather than using it as a political weapon to target a specific state government.
References to Mundra Port and State Campaigns
During his address, Baltej Pannu also brought up the issue of drug trafficking through the Mundra Port in Gujarat. He alleged that massive consignments of drugs are arriving at the Mundra Port, suggesting that the focus should also be on the entry points of these substances into the country. He further detailed the efforts being made by the Punjab government, noting that the Punjab Police has launched a dedicated campaign titled 'Yuddh Nasha Viruddh' (War Against Drugs), while pannu accused certain elements of trying to mislead the public to prevent this campaign from succeeding. He acknowledged that while the 'Yuddh Nasha Viruddh' initiative has been started with full commitment, achieving complete success on the ground will take time.
Political Shift and Allegations of Betrayal
The spokesperson also touched upon the political background of Harbhajan Singh. He noted that Harbhajan Singh was previously a Rajya Sabha MP from the Aam Aadmi Party. However, following a split in the party led by Raghav Chadha, Harbhajan Singh joined the BJP. Pannu accused the former cricketer of betraying the people of Punjab by switching sides. He further alleged that Harbhajan Singh is now merely acting on the instructions of the BJP, posting whatever content is provided to him by the party to serve their political agenda. Pannu concluded by stating that several other celebrities have also posted the same video, and they too are under the scanner for contributing to the defamation of the state.
