The political and social atmosphere in Jharkhand has intensified as Chief Minister Hemant Soren finally broke his silence regarding the ongoing student protests in the state capital. For the past 11 days, the Jairam Singh Stadium in Ranchi has become the epicenter of a massive demonstration where students have gathered to voice their grievances against the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). The protesters are primarily demanding the cancellation of the 14th Combined Civil Services Preliminary Examination and a high-level probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into alleged irregularities.

The dispute traces back to the 14th Combined Civil Services Competitive Examination, which was conducted on April 19. Following the exam, the model answer key was released on April 21, and candidates were invited to submit their objections. Shortly after the results, allegations of widespread fraud began to circulate on social media platforms. Protesters pointed towards viral OMR sheets as evidence of systemic failure. One specific case that fueled the fire involved an OMR sheet of a candidate who allegedly solved only 48 out of 100 questions but still managed to secure a selection. This discrepancy led to a massive outburst of anger among the student community against the existing system.
Hunger Strike and Political Pressure
At the heart of the protest is Devendranath Mahto, who has launched a hunger strike at the protest site. Mahto has taken a solemn vow to continue his fast until a complete cleanup of both the JPSC and JSSC agencies is achieved. His demands are clear: either the Chief Minister must come to the protest site to engage in a direct dialogue with the students, or he must resign from his post. Mahto has stated that the agitation won't cease until their demands for transparency and justice are met.
